Justin

Justin has been doing CrossFit at CrossFit Slipstream for six months!  He had his sights set on hiking to Everest base camp and needed to get in shape fast!  The secret to his success was consistently going to class 3 to 4 times a week, and as the pictures show, he even tested out his gear in a training session.  He completed his goal a few weeks ago, achieving his Everest climb.  Read more about Justin below:

1.Why did you decide to try CrossFit?

I came to CrossFit because I needed a jump-start.  I was in a rut.  I have a gym in my building and plenty of equipment, but lacked the motivation and the programming to get where I wanted to go, and I had to get there relatively fast.  You see, in November I had agreed to go with a friend on a little hike in the Himalayas, in April, to Everest base camp.  I had four months, and I was in the worst shape I had been in in years.  I had been looking at CrossFit Slipstream, the gym across the river that I could see from my house, I had done CrossFit years ago, and I knew what I had to do.

2. How has having a coach changed your workout or fitness results?

The difference between having John and the other coaches at CrossFit Slipstream, and not having a coach at all is night and day.  As I said previously, I struggle, like most do, with motivation.  Getting there is often the hardest part.  John’s programming makes it easier, his instruction makes it less intimidating and his supervision and scaling makes it safer no matter your fitness level or previous injuries.

3. How has CrossFit affected your life/health?

I have a demanding job and a crazy schedule. I needed motivation and I needed to get in total body shape.  I had a goal, I wrote the goal on the whiteboard at the gym, and I put a picture of Everest base camp on the refrigerator at home.  Without CrossFit, I would never have been able to achieve my goal.  I couldn’t have done it without you!

4. What would you say to someone who is thinking about trying CrossFit?

Whatever you think about CrossFit, forget it.  If you don’t know about CrossFit, check it out.  You don’t have to be an athlete, you don’t have to be in amazing shape to join, and you don’t have to be as intimidated as I was the first time I tried it out.  The truth is, we are there for motivation, we are there for community and everyone at the gym supports each other along the way.

1.Why did you decide to try CrossFit?

I was looking for a more challenging workout that wasn’t boring.  I have tried P90X as well as other gyms/studios and my biggest issue was the lack of diversity.  With other group classes and P90X – the workouts were hard to a degree, but it was the same thing every single time.  I felt like I wasn’t always being challenged and I found myself becoming very bored and losing interest.  A few of my co-workers were longtime “CrossFitters” and they were always telling me I had to try it – so I finally took the plunge and I am so glad I did!  It is honestly just what I had been looking for.

2. How has having a coach changed your workout or fitness results?

Having a coach has made me really focus on my technique and form.  In other classes, I was one of many, many other students so the instructor couldn’t really focus on form.  Because proper technique is so important to get the results I want and prevent injury, this has been a huge benefit.  Additionally, having a coach has forced me to push myself harder.  There have been plenty of times John has pushed me to add more weight, when I never would have on my own. He pushes me to challenge myself – which will benefit me in the long term.

3. How has CrossFit affected your life/health?

CrossFit has finally provided an outlet to achieve the results I want – which is great!  But beyond that, it has also taught me to push the limits and challenge myself.  I have not experienced another workout that leaves me feeling so accomplished.

4. What would you say to someone who is thinking about trying CrossFit?

Don’t be scared/intimidated!  When I first considered trying CrossFit, I was worried that I wouldn’t fit in – but that quickly faded as I met the coaches and other members.  If you want to be part of an encouraging community, challenge yourself, learn new things and get great results – CrossFit is for you.  Don’t hesitate – take the plunge!

Luis

CROSSFIT SLIPSTREAM MEMBER HIGHLIGHT

1.Why did you decide to try CrossFit?

My wife introduced me to CrossFit. I was not a big fan of working out.

I decided to give it a try and see what was so cool about it. At first, I felt nervous because it was definitely a type of exercise I never tried before. I decided to stick with it to see if would help me build my strength and endurance, and it has been great. I play soccer and I used to not be able to last on the field no more than 10 minutes without asking for a sub; now I can stay in the field for at least 25 minutes.

2. How has having a coach changed your workout or fitness results?

After I got hooked on CrossFit, I started to watch more videos online and watching the CrossFit Games and thinking it seemed simple to do, wrong! Having a coach has made me appreciate how much more there is to learn. It’s more than just lifting weights and doing all types of WOD. Coaching has made me learn the right way to approach each work out. Being taught to have the right technique and watch our form in every WOD has really helped.

3. How has CrossFit affected your life/health?

CrossFit has made my life more enjoyable with my spouse, every night we looking at the WOD of the day and try to make it as many days as we can. It has helped me at work, where I do mostly lifting, applying the techniques I have learned at CrossFit and not hurt my back. Being more physically active makes me feel great. Doing CrossFit also makes me think twice about the poor choices of food and helps me eat more healthy.

4. What would you say to someone who is thinking about trying CrossFit?

It is definitely different from regular membership gyms where is very easy to give up, because there is no body to support you and give you a shout of encouragement at the end of the workout. Doing Crossfit definitely makes you feel that you could achieve your goals.

Get in the best shape of your life!

1.Why did you decide to try CrossFit?

I am someone who can easily become crippled by indecision. As someone who was already lifting weights several times a week, I couldn’t stick with any sort of plan, and was always changing up my routine. This would often have me agonizing each day over what I was going to do at the gym. I desperately needed someone to help me figure out what to do, but could not afford a personal trainer. CrossFit appealed to me because I knew that to get an amazing workout, I just needed to show up and do whatever was planned for the day.  I would also be under the supervision and guidance of a coach every single workout. Most importantly, it looked super cool and challenging.

2. How has having a coach changed your workout or fitness results?

My form obviously needed some tweaking. Having a coach really helps me dial in my form to ensure I am working the muscles that are supposed to be worked for a given movement. He gives prompts for each movement, and helps each athlete find the right prompts that work for him or her. This way, when I build strength and endurance, I know I am doing it in the most correct and efficient way. I feel like I kind of tore down the house and I’m now rebuilding it with a better foundation.

3. How has CrossFit affected your life/health?

Before I started CrossFit, I always had pain in my right hip flexor.  After about a month of CrossFit, the pain totally went away. I credit this to the regular mobility work that we do, as well as having a coach to ensure our form is in tiptop shape. My mobility, strength, and cardio have all improved immensely, and I feel like a more well-rounded athlete.

4. What would you say to someone who is thinking about trying CrossFit?

It is not as intimidating as you think it is! People of all ages and abilities can do this. Just show up, leave your ego at the door, and do the best you can for your level of ability. If you are even slightly interested, you should at least give it a try. CrossFit Slipstream offers free introductory classes, as well as regular programs throughout the year designed  to ease you in to CrossFit.

1.Why did you decide to try CrossFit?

I had previously been really good at exercising for about three months in a row and then stopping for about the same amount of time.  Long term I wasn’t seeing improvement and I didn’t feel fit.  I was bored at the gym. I wanted to find a community of people who were enthusiastic about fitness and something that could keep me interested for the long term.

2. How has having a coach changed your workout or fitness results?

Having a coach has allowed me to identify issues that were holding me back in my results and come up with a plan to deal with my weaknesses.  I never realized that flexibility and mobility had been holding back my progress.  John has helped me immensely on working to improve my mobility.  Not only is this helping me to progress in my fitness in the short term, it will help me to remain active for the rest of my life.

3. How has CrossFit affected your life/health?

I have become a lot more fit since I started CrossFit.  After about 8 months of CrossFit I can lift as much if not more than I did when I was a high school athlete.  I recently ran a mile about a minute faster than I ever had before without specifically training for it! I can do a lot of movements now, like handstand pushups, that I had never been able to do before.   This has carried over to my daily life where I have a lot more energy and confidence in my ability to acomplish difficult tasks.  I actually look forward to working out now!

4. What would you say to someone who is thinking about trying CrossFit?

Do it!  The community at CrossFit Slipstream is great!  We have a wide variety of ages and athletic abilities, and we all have a great time working out together.  Everyone is very supportive and John is great at scaling the workouts so everyone can be safe and get an excellent workout.

Derrick

Derrick has been a CrossFit Slipstream member for five months.  He’s interested and willing to try new things and always gives it his best each day. He typically attends 3 times per week at 6am.  Derrick is very friendly and welcoming to guests, and we are grateful he is a part of Slipstream!

1. Why did you decide to try CrossFit?
My on-and-off fitness routine consisted of grinding out a couple miles on a treadmill at the local gym, or enduring yet another round of an at-home fitness program like P90X in my living room. And I was tired. Tired of the same-old-same-old. Meanwhile, I had seen the CrossFit Games on television, and had always wanted to check it out. The final push came from a few friends who encouraged me to finally check out a free drop-in, which I did in February, 2016.

2. How is having a CrossFit coach changed your workout or fitness results?

I can’t stress enough how impactful having a coach like John has helped me with my fitness. When I started CrossFit, as a novice to having weights incorporated into my workouts, I was a bit apprehensive at first about how I’d fare doing things like backsquats or deadlifts. But John coaching combined with Slipstream’s On Ramp program was an excellent way to teach me the basics in a comfortable environment where I could learn about proper form and technique. For me, that was huge. Now, of course, I still get that one-on-one coaching, but I’m also benefitting from him pushing me in workouts. When you’re in your living room, it’s easy to quit, or scale down your effort — but John, and your fellow workout partners, help spur you to work as hard as you can, and that’s really rewarding. You’re working out as a team, and there’s camaraderie in that. And that’s something I really like. All of that stuff combined have me in the best shape of my life. I’m lifting more, running further, and having more fun than I’ve ever had while exercising.

3. How has doing CrossFit affected your health and/or life?

For the first time, probably ever, I look forward to working out. I look forward to seeing my workout friends, lifting heavy weights, beating previous times. It sounds corny, but I’m happier for it.

4. What would you say to someone who is thinking about trying CrossFit?

If CrossFit seems daunting or too challenging or scary, I beg you to give John and the members of CrossFit Slipstream a chance to show you why it’s not. You wont be disappointed.

Enjoy working out again!

Tom

CrossFit Slipstream

Tom was CrossFit Slipstream’s first member two and half years ago! For those of you that have worked out with him, you know he works HARD but still has fun! He typically attends 3 to 4 times per week. Tom makes everyone feel welcome, whether they are a drop-in from out of town, or just a member he’s never met before. We joke that CrossFit Slipstream is “Tom’s gym” since he’s been with us since the beginning.

1. Why did you decide to try CrossFit?
It was too cold outside to run. I researched CrossFit. Slipstream was just opening. It was convenient to where I work. I met with John, stopped by a week later and started on ramp.

2. How is having a CrossFit coach changed your workout or fitness results?

CrossFit has increased my strength and mobility. Running was keeping me in decent shape but there was no strength component. The strength building component makes the difference in overall results.

3. How has doing CrossFit affected your health and/or life?

Having a coach is motivational and provides an element of safety. A large part of the workouts are technique driven. Having a coach watch you and making corrections helps maximize your performance.

4. What would you say to someone who is thinking about trying CrossFit?

I would recommend CrossFit to anyone. The workouts are designed to challenge you mentally and physically. One thing that has helped me is setting long term goals. If you don’t get a movement today you may get it tomorrow.

Brandon

DCIM101GOPRO

Brandon has been a member of CrossFit Slipstream for nine months!  He attends CrossFit classes three times a week.  Brandon is passionate about CrossFit!  He loves to learn new skills and how to continue getting better.

Brandon shares a few of his thoughts about CrossFit with us:

1. Why did you decide to try CrossFit?

It’s easy to think about all the things we need to do better in life, but it really comes down to making the decision to do something different if we actually want to improve anything. I joined CrossFit because I knew I needed to do something different. I’ve never enjoyed working out, running, going to the gym…but I needed to. Partly because watching my diet is even less entertaining! I am also in the military and its become harder every year to meet fitness standards. I’ve come to realize it really has to be part of my life and since last summer, being a member at Crossfit Slipstream has been everything I’ve needed in this area, and it’s FUN!

2. How is having a CrossFit coach changed your workout or fitness results?

Doing something different, like joining CrossFit, I knew I’d have to get past this barrier that I don’t know ¾ of these workouts/movements it can be quite intimidating at first. Having a coach to show me everything I need to do prior to beginning the workout telling me where I need to improve my technique is where the value is. The coaches have been quite the motivator, encourager, trainer, and leader I need in progressing through the workouts and obtaining the results I’m after.

3. How has doing CrossFit affected your health and/or life?

The first month at CrossFit Slipstream, the first thing I realized was my mobility. I had always used the term “mobility” very lightly. I never even realized what the fitness term really meant until I showed up on my first day and I could barely do a squat. After the first month of CrossFit it was incredible to see how much more comfortable I felt when I was bending, kneeling, doing anything overhead…not just at the gym, but also at home. After 1 month I knew it was just the beginning.

4. What would you say to someone who is thinking about trying CrossFit?

Like anything…if you want to improve something you need to do something different. Jump in…we are a community, so you don’t have to do this alone. We’re all in it and all have a common mission. Lastly, though I saw improvement in the first month in mobility, it wasn’t until month #3 it all started to come together. I became very familiar with the movements, technical aspects, and I was starting to see my numbers increase drastically. Also, if you’re looking for a good time to workout, you’ll find me at the noon slot!

Kellie

DCIM102GOPRO

Kellie has been a member of CrossFit Slipstream for nine months!  She attends CrossFit classes three times a week.  Kellie is serious about her workouts!  She’s there to get work done and she’s getting the results to show for it!

Kellie shares a few of her thoughts about CrossFit with us:

1. Why did you decide to try CrossFit?

I was starting to realize that several of my fitness goals and interests were not being met at a traditional gym.  I was tired of the cardio machines and repetitive group exercise class options.  I had read quite a bit about the benefits of lifting heavy for women and I wanted to try it but didn’t know how to start.   I had been using kettlebells mostly on my own at home for a few years and loved it, but it was getting lonely, so I was also seeking a fitness community.  CrossFit seemed like a good mix of everything I was looking for- workout variety, heavy lifting, kettlebells, and a community of people with the same interests.

2. How is having a CrossFit coach changed your workout or fitness results?

Having someone to coach me along has really helped me realize I can do more than I often think.  It’s really beneficial to have coaches watch my progress and give me the nudge I need to try a little more weight.   At the same time, having a coach has also helped me realize that form is so important and sometimes I need to back off on a certain movement until I’m ready to do it with proper form.  I also like having someone to program the workouts and push me to do things that I will try to avoid if I do it on my own, like burpees!

3. How has doing CrossFit affected your health and/or life?

Doing CrossFit has taught me a lot about my perceived limits and constantly pushes me to step out of my comfort zone in a good way.  I am stronger than I have ever been and I’m just getting started.  Instead of mindlessly zoning out on a treadmill trudging along just to get a workout in, I am engaged in the work and making measurable progress.  I feel more confident and less critical of myself and I attribute that to CrossFit.

4. What would you say to someone who is thinking about trying CrossFit?

Absolutely give it a try.  I know it can seem  intimidating but it really isn’t.  Every work out can be adjusted to fit you and everyone is supportive.  Go try a free workout!

Mike

DCIM102GOPRO

Mike has been a member of CrossFit Slipstream for four months!   He currently attends the Strength class and CrossFit classes three times a week.  Mike goes all in!  He puts out everything he has!  It’s a true inspiration and motivator for his fellow CrossFitters!

Mike shares a few of his thoughts about CrossFit with us:

1. Why did you decide to try CrossFit?

With the birth of our son this in 2014, my wife and I have had to adjust to new schedules. My workouts suffered and eventually disappeared. Late last year I finally decided to do something about it and join CrossFit so that I can be the healthy role model that me son deserves.

2. How is having a CrossFit coach changed your workout or fitness results?

I may complain profusely about a tough workout, but  don’t let that fool you, I prefer my workouts hard and challenging. I would never push myself this hard on my own but knowing John, Mitch, and Mike are watching my form helps me feel confident to keep pushing limits.

3. How has doing CrossFit affected your health and/or life?

I can already see a difference in my endurance as well as in the strength in my knees and back.

4. What would you say to someone who is thinking about trying CrossFit?

Just show up.

Eveline

Eveline has been a member of CrossFit Slipstream for five months!   She typically attends CrossFit classes at 6am three times a week.  Eveline is motivated and plans to pursue her new-found enjoyment of weightlifting by joining our Strength class starting January 11th.

Eveline shares a few of her thoughts about CrossFit with us:

1. Why did you decide to try CrossFit?

I was interested in changing my routine, and heard so many great things about CrossFit. I wanted to do something that would challenge me both physically and mentally.

2. How is having a CrossFit coach changed your workout or fitness results?

I am now more aware of the things my body can do, and how to properly execute them. I have learned the proper techniques for movements that have helped me become stronger and understand how they can affect my body.

3. How has doing CrossFit affected your health and/or life?

Before CrossFit I was doing typical workouts such as running on the treadmill for 30 minutes a day, and not seeing many results. CrossFit has allowed me to become stronger, and has motivated me to want to continue to do and learn more. Each day that I work out I am happy to see the results and improvements I make regardless of how small they are.

4. What would you say to someone who is thinking about trying CrossFit?

Give it a try. It is not as intimidating as it may seem. Everyone involved has years of experience, and are there to help you become stronger and  motivate you along the way. :)

Happier. Stronger. More Confident!

I decided to try Crossfit because I wanted to gain strength, lift some weights and tone my body.

2. How is having a CrossFit coach changed your workout or fitness results?

It has tremendously opened my eyes with my workouts before. They were lazy and I didn’t push myself hard enough. I feel a lot stronger and better about myself.

3. How has doing CrossFit affected your health and/or life?

CrossFit has changed my energy as well as strength. Always pushing myself to do more at everything. I feel great and can now carry a 50 pound bag of rice without waiting for my spouse!!

4. What would you say to someone who is thinking about trying CrossFit?

Try it, what are you waiting for? It is so much fun and you have one on one coaches to help motivate you.

1. Why did you decide to try CrossFit?

I attended the Wine and WOD event in May.  I had a fantastic time, hard work but a lot of fun.

2. How did you feel on your first day of CrossFit Lite class (before and/or after)?

I started CrossFit Lite the end of May.  I was a little nervous at first, but everyone was really nice and very supportive.

3. How has doing CrossFit affected your health and/or life?

CrossFit has helped me tone and lose a couple of pounds. I also love the way I can leave the stresses of the day behind.

4. What would you say to someone who is thinking about trying CrossFit?

I would tell anyone CrossFit is one of the best things I have done for myself.  Not just the physical gain but the mental.

Andy

CrossFit Slipstream

Andy started at CrossFit Slipstream nine months ago!  He is an avid runner and dedicated family man.  He likes to run races and challenge himself in the gym.

Andy shared some of his thoughts about CrossFit with us:

1. Why did you decide to do CrossFit at a CrossFit Box?

As a guy who loves running and spending time at the gym, once I became a dad, I didn’t have the freetime I once had. I needed something quicker and intense and I like to do a variety of things. Plus I felt like I had plateaued. I had reached some internal governor that was holding me back. I can’t get better doing the same thing over and over again. I had to switch it up.

2. How is having a CrossFit coach changed your workout or fitness results?

I’ve learned a lot about Olympic weightlifting, mobility, pacing, kettlebells, handstands, kilogram conversion, and more. I even learned how to do a pull up properly. There’s a lot of mental focus and body awareness that I wasn’t always using during my fitness journey. It’s been a great addition to my training for marathons and cross-country ski races. Plus, I’m way stronger.

3. How has doing CrossFit affected your health and/or life?

It’s broken down some mental barriers. It’s forced me to attempt things that I may be anxious about otherwise. I enjoy seeing what I’m capable of and pushing myself. It’s also given me some freetime to spend with my daughter and some sanity for my wife. I probably look a little better too.

4. What would you say to someone who is thinking about trying CrossFit?

There’s a lot to be said of guided workouts. There’s so much more than just wondering around a gym mindlessly pushing weights around. I learn something new every day. Alone, you’re likely doing something either inefficiently or in a way that could cause injury. I appreciate the extra time spent on mobility and form. It’s one thing to get fit, but it’s another to stay fit and injury free.

Maureen

CrossFit Slipstream

Maureen started CrossFit Lite two months ago!  She has been attending three days a week since and is determined to learn this CrossFit thing.  Maureen is very friendly!  She has a positive “can do” attitude and is dedicated to coming to class and doing her best.

Maureen shared some of her thoughts about doing CrossFit with us:

1. Why did you decide to try CrossFit?
I decided to join CrossFit because it sounded challenging  and I was very curious what it was all about.  John was was very informative the Monday of my intro class and didn’t seem to think I was too old or out of shape to start the CrossFit Lite classes,  which I REALLY appreciated.

2. How did you feel on your first day of CrossFit Lite class (before and/or after)?
My first CrossFit Lite class I was really trying to absorb all I was being told to do and  remember how to do it and count and repeat, all in the correct Form and Order.  I came home tired, but I felt better.  I think its the feeling of learning exercise that is interesting and good for you.

3. How has doing CrossFit affected your health and/or life?
CrossFit Lite has affected my health by making me move and push myself to learn and remember something new.  I’m also sleeping better.  I like getting new information on nutrition, the correct way to eat AND learning the hard way, cortisone injections do NOT solve heel problems.  When I struggle in class I know I will get instruction on how to do it the right way, with no judgement, which boosts my confidence to continue.

4. What would you say to someone who is thinking about trying CrossFit?

I will encourage anyone to try CrossFit.  The training is very helpful, and everyone will help you.  CrossFit makes you feel better because you are moving your body and using your mind… all the counting!!  It’s challenging and worth the effort.

Are you ready to change your life?
