1.Why did you decide to try CrossFit?

I am someone who can easily become crippled by indecision. As someone who was already lifting weights several times a week, I couldn’t stick with any sort of plan, and was always changing up my routine. This would often have me agonizing each day over what I was going to do at the gym. I desperately needed someone to help me figure out what to do, but could not afford a personal trainer. CrossFit appealed to me because I knew that to get an amazing workout, I just needed to show up and do whatever was planned for the day.  I would also be under the supervision and guidance of a coach every single workout. Most importantly, it looked super cool and challenging.

2. How has having a coach changed your workout or fitness results?

My form obviously needed some tweaking. Having a coach really helps me dial in my form to ensure I am working the muscles that are supposed to be worked for a given movement. He gives prompts for each movement, and helps each athlete find the right prompts that work for him or her. This way, when I build strength and endurance, I know I am doing it in the most correct and efficient way. I feel like I kind of tore down the house and I’m now rebuilding it with a better foundation.

3. How has CrossFit affected your life/health?

Before I started CrossFit, I always had pain in my right hip flexor.  After about a month of CrossFit, the pain totally went away. I credit this to the regular mobility work that we do, as well as having a coach to ensure our form is in tiptop shape. My mobility, strength, and cardio have all improved immensely, and I feel like a more well-rounded athlete.

4. What would you say to someone who is thinking about trying CrossFit?

It is not as intimidating as you think it is! People of all ages and abilities can do this. Just show up, leave your ego at the door, and do the best you can for your level of ability. If you are even slightly interested, you should at least give it a try. CrossFit Slipstream offers free introductory classes, as well as regular programs throughout the year designed  to ease you in to CrossFit.
